Alice in Wonderland

June 18 & 19, 25 & 26, 2022

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

The tale of Alice in Wonderland was first told by Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Ludwidge Dodgson) during a boat trip on July 4th, 1862, to the three young daughters of Henry Liddell. The children, one of whom was named Alice, loved the story and begged Carroll to write it down. Carroll finished writing the text in February 1863, but gradually revised and expanded the story, publishing it with illustrations by John Tenniel.

Carroll was not only a writer of many books, letters, pamphlets, and poems. He was also a mathematician, clergyman, and photographer. He was fond of theater, opera, many different games (croquet, billiards, and chess among them), card tricks, and invented many mathematical and word puzzles. He also invented many things for himself, including a tool for writing in the dark! Due to this wide assortment of interests, it’s easy to see where he drew inspiration for the fantastical characters in Alice in Wonderland, as well as why the Alice books have made him one of the most quoted authors.

My own introduction to Alice in Wonderland came as an avid reader in my youth. I’ve always loved the characters and iconic scenes, especially the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, and the Queen of Hearts constantly threatening to behead everyone. Whether you’ve read the books, seen the various movie versions, or this is your first introduction to Wonderland, I sincerely hope you enjoy your time with us. This has been a magical production to work on, and couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to make the magic come to life. Thank you for coming to support the Alcott Arts Center, and the hard-working, magic-making cast and crew of “Alice in Wonderland”!
